Why this history matters

Advocacy was part of Tim’s life before it became his profession.

Before beginning his legal career, Tim was already working on disability and accessibility issues in British Columbia. His advocacy included helping advance accessible transit through HandyDART and helping build organizations that gave people with disabilities and other members of the public a stronger voice.

Tim later articled with Harry Rankin, QC, whose commitment to public-interest law and access to justice became an important influence on his legal career. Tim went on to practise law in Vancouver while continuing his involvement in disability rights, public-interest advocacy, and pro bono service.

That background matters because legal problems are rarely only about documents. They can also involve insurers, employers, institutions, estates, deadlines, and systems that are difficult to navigate when your health, income, job, or family is already under pressure.

Tim helped co-found the disability-rights organization now known as Disability Alliance BC, part of a longstanding commitment to accessibility and disability advocacy.

Harry Rankin hired Tim as his articling law student in 1983, beginning a formative professional relationship with one of British Columbia’s best-known public-interest advocates.
